
S – Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

O – Commentary:
Children, the psalmist wrote, are some of the Lord’s providential blessings (see blessed, v. 5). They are a reward from the Lord. Sons help defend the family for they are like weapons (arrows) in the hands of a mighty man. Sons are capable of defending the family in civil cases (at the gate civil cases were discussed and decided).
The imagery of arrows and of defense “in the gate” was natural for a nation endangered from without and within.

A—Children and grandchildren are a gift. They are part of a person’s legacy. We must pour our knowledge and love of God into them. History shows that where there isn’t investment in spiritual understanding and growth, generations fall away from God. We must not let this happen.
R – Heavenly Father, you are the creator of all. Please give us the strength and understanding to invest in our children and grandchildren. We want them to know you personally and to walk in your truth. Give them receptive hearts to your Word and presence in their lives daily.
